Introduction to a social media marketer- Week 1

Hello, my name is Gracie Jonas. I am a senior Public Relations major with a minor in Enterprise Studies. I plan to graduate this May. Although I am a senior, this is only my second year at OU. I began my college experience at Rose State College in Oklahoma City as a student athlete. I was fortunate enough to receive a full ride scholarship to play soccer.

Being a student athlete taught me a lot about responsibility and determination. Trying to balance school life, social life, and soccer is something that took a while to adjust to, but at the end of it I couldn't be more proud of what I accomplished.

Currently, I am employed as a social media marketer for StellaNova Coffee. If you haven't been there yet, you should try it. Great coffee and great people! (I'm not just saying that because I work there either.) Anyway, this experience has also been challenging, because I am adjusting from being a young student, to a professional in the workplace. I am challenged everyday through this job and although it may be stressful at times, I know it is molding me into becoming a better person. For that I am thankful. For now, I plan to continue my career as a social media marketer, however I may change directions in the future. I've always had an eye for event planning and I know that is an opportunity I'd love to explore.

Apart from school and work, I have a loving family and boyfriend. I am very close with my parents, who have supported me through every adventure I've taken on, and I'm fortunate to have siblings who are (mostly) great company. My sister is 18 and my brother is 16. They both attend Noble Public Schools, where my mother teaches.

In my spare time, I enjoy staying active by participating in outdoor activities, and spending time with my friends and family. I love working out, traveling, eating great food, and sometimes literally doing nothing. It's all about balance, am I right?

I hope this semester continues to push me to persevere into reaching the goal I've dreamed about my whole life: graduation. I am both excited and nervous to step out into the world without a student discount, but the time is approaching so I must prepare.

I am eager to learn new stories and express my creativity through this class, so here's to a great last semester!

  1. Seeing the phrase "social media" in your Introduction made me happy, Gracie: I am such a fan of the power of social media in education, and I hope this class can be a way for you to ponder that aspect of social media. Teachers on Twitter: it's a big thing! And doing social media for Stella Nova: maybe you will want to do a project on the folklore and mythology of coffee, tea, and whatever beverages are of interest. The folklore of food and drink is a powerful thing! Or maybe do something with modern myths, ak.a. urban legends: coffee legends at Snopes.com ... and you'll see that I share some coffee graphics in the announcements since coffee is a big part of college life for a lot of people! Here's one of my favorites: Do you need coffee?

  2. It's hard to decide which would be better: a full ride or getting to spend all four years at OU (boomer). I'm just kidding, of course! With great scholarships and what sounds like a stellar job already it seems like you won't have too much trouble finding financial success. Also I love the Garden of the Gods, it's such a crazy place of weird adobe beauty stuck in the middle of lush Colorado!

  3. Hi Gracie! I'm totally with you on the free that comes with graduation. It's only in a few months and I still have to figure out my life (gulp). But it looks like you have a handle on things! I don't know a lot about social media marketing, but I'm sure you'll do fantastic considering you already have a job in the field. Whatever you decided to do, I'm sure you'll be successful!

  4. Hey Gracie! Congrats on (being close to) graduating! Being a social media marketer sounds like a really cool job and I think it's great that you have already found a place doing what you want to do. As for event planning, that sounds like it could be a blast. I wonder if there's a future of planning your own events and then social media marketing for yourself? Whatever you decide, it sounds like you are determined enough to make it happen! Good luck!

  5. Hey Gracie!
Being a student athlete must have been tough. Managing your time must have been a crucial part of first two years of college. I do not think I would be able to handle it.
I have not been to StellaNova Coffee yet because I usually do not drink coffee, but I plan on going. One of my friends, who I play tennis with, dad owns it and I have heard it is really good. What a great to try and get people in!

  6. Hey Gracie! I know what it is like to transfer into the University of Oklahoma as a junior and getting to experience all that the university has to offer. It is really cool to hear you were a student athlete and in soccer none the less. I never was much of a soccer fan growing up but i told myself this past year that i had to make it to a women's soccer match here at Oklahoma. I was totally amazed at how fast paced and interactive the game was. I was an instant fan and made it to a few more games that fall. Good luck on the rest of your semester and I hope to see you this spring at graduation!

  7. Hey Gracie! I am also a transfer, so I have been a senior a few years. My first college was where I received a scholarship to play volleyball, but the education was not quite what I expected. Being a student athlete is tough and I have major respect for you. I appreciate you sharing so much with us and look forward to reading your stories.

  8. Hi Gracie! That is awesome that you played soccer at Rose State before transferring to OU. I think that is really impressive that you were able to balance being a student athlete with academics. I am graduating in May 2018 too, and I am going to miss OU so much. I think OU is such a great school, and I hope you are glad you made the decision to transfer here.

  9. Hey Gracie! I barely had to read your introduction, because we've done an interview before ;) It's so awesome that you're doing social media for Stella Nova! The white mocha coffee there is my favorite, and I know it's doing super well with business so far. I can't wait to see where we both end up somewhere in the PR world. Glad you're doing well!

  10. Hi Gracie! Congratulations on your upcoming graduation. I'm not graduating for another year and I'm already nervous about it. It's cool that you already have a job involving public relations. That should make transitioning to life after college easier.

  11. Hi Gracie! It's super cool that you were a soccer player at Rose State your first two years of college. I always find it so impressive to see how athletes are able to balance their school, work, and social life. It's definitely a challenging one! It's also that you are a social media repa t Stella Nova! I always pass that place on main, but have never stopped to try it, maybe I should do that.

  12. Hi Gracie!
I think it's neat that you started at another college playing soccer and then changed your road to come to OU! I did the same thing actually, I am a senior as well but this is only my second year at OU because I originally started at Oklahoma City University as a dance major. However, I still have another year until I graduate so congrats on staying on track! I love coffee, so I will have to check out Stella Nova sometime, it sounds really neat. I'm looking forward to following your blog!

  13. Ah! I went to Stella Nova the other day and absolutely loved it. Such a nice place with reasonably priced food and a comfortable environment (now it sounds like I'm the social media marketer). I think that you joint interests in event planning and social media marketing work together particularly well... they seem like skills that would complement each other if you have to both design and PR an event.

  14. Hi Gracie!
How cool that you went to college for soccer! I always wanted to play, but ended up always being the little girl who would rather chase butterflies instead of the soccer ball. I've been to Stella Nova and really enjoyed their atmosphere. I have worked as a social media marketer before and it is challenging, but also a lot of fun!

  15. Hi Gracie!
That's so awesome that you got to play soccer in college! I always wanted to play college athletics but never reached the level to play. Its also very exciting that you are graduating soon! Balancing both academics and a job can be very difficult so major respect! Its awesome that you already have a job lined up and I wish you the best!

  16. Hey Gracie!
I also started off my college journey at a university in OKC! I attended OCU my freshman year because they offered me a full ride and I thought that was worth it. Long story short, I filled out an application to transfer to OU only 2 months into living at OCU. I think taking most of my gen-eds at a smaller school was super beneficial, though. OU is fantastic, but sometimes these huge class sizes are a bit overwhelming! I hope your college journey has been great and I hope you feel like taking the path you did worked out for you. Sometimes I think getting through my major would have been easier if I'd gone to OU from the start, but in the end I don't regret it for a second. I have met too many amazing people along the way.

  17. Hey Gracie! That's so cool you were able to get a full ride scholarship for soccer because that's so unique and something not a lot of people can say! Also, I love StellaNova! They have great coffee so it's so cool that you get to work there! Were you in school while your mother was teaching? That can make for a unique relationship! Good luck this semester!

  18. Hey Gracie!

I think it is awesome that you had a full ride scholarship for soccer! One thing that I would change about myself is being more athletic. I enjoy working out but I have never had the coordination necessary to actually be successful in playing a sport, so that is awesome!! I also think its great that you are planning to be a social media marketer. I think there is immense power in social media, especially in today's society. I am all about bringing change via social media. Good luck with the end of your last semester of college!
