Storytelling: The beautiful daughters

The Beautiful Daughters

Once there lived a mother, who gave birth to two beautiful girls. They were so beautiful, that the gods casted a magical genie to look after them, protect them, and give them anything they desired. The daughters grew to be brace, valiant women, with fierce motives and hearts of gold. They were loved by all who approached them, and made efforts to help anyone they could.

The daughters lived a life of goodness and stability, but one day, a woman said to them, "daughters, you must help the city. There is a jewel that is missing from the king's temple, and without it the city will crumble."

The daughters immediately knew what to do. They packed up, and traveled to find the jewel. "Before you go," said the woman, "you must know that the jewel is in a dangerous place, where no being has stepped foot on."

Subtle fear struck the daughter's eyes, but then they remembered their genies were with them, so they did not fear any longer.

After days of traveling, the daughters approached a large mountain that was shimmering a green hue. They knew the jewel lied there. They approached the dark entry to the gates of the mountain, where a troll stood tall and strong.

"Be gone, Troll!" yelled the daughter, and the genie made the troll disappear. The daughters approached many more creatures throughout the mysterious mountain, and the genies made them all disappear. The daughters then stumbled upon a guardian of the jewel. The genies tried to make him disappear as well, but still he stood.

"I am not strong enough to move this beast," said the genie, "you must make a deal with the beast to receive the jewel."

"Ah, yes, a deal," said the guardian beast, "I will give you this jewel, but one of you must give yourself to me first."

The daughters thought long and hard about what decision to make, then one daughter had a thought...

"I will go," she said.

The beast took the daughter and handed the jewel over to the other.

The daughter held the jewel with such satisfaction because now she can save her city, but what about her sister? She thought hard before realizing what her sister's plan had been. The daughter then asked her genie to send her sister back to her.

The wish was granted and the daughters escaped the mountain, jewel in hand, and returned it to the city. The daughters were thought of as heroes for eternity.

Author's Note: In the original story, the twin brothers loved adventure. One set off to the land where no man returns and was killed. The other brother went to rescue him and using his special charm, he brought him back to the life. The brothers then had disagreements and killed each other.
I wanted my story to be different in the sense that the daughters were friends, and it had a happier ending. I also wanted to change it up and make the destination a little more interesting.

  1. I actually considered doing an entire portfolio project on changing stories from dark/evil endings to happy ones. Happy endings are cliched, but sometimes they are what you need to add to a story to make it more memorable/powerful. Often myths are there to teach harsh lessons, so they need to exemplify the harsh consequences of failing to follow directions. These days, the world around us is getting less dark and less harsh everyday (although it can be hard to see sometimes). Adding happy endings is a great way to reach a new audience with an old moral.

  2. I like how the daughters knew exactly what they had to do when they heard the jewel was gone. There was no hesitation, they were all in from the beginning. The details in the story were outstanding. And I also enjoyed how the story ended with a happy ending. You do not tend to see this and it was a nice change.

  3. I really like the changes you made! I think the world could use more fairy tales where the main characters are strong, confident women. I love how they knew exactly what to do to outsmart the guardian. I was curious as they were having the genies make all the trolls disappear if they were going to have a harder time defeating the guardian or if they would even be able to defeat it. You're story was much more positive in the end than the original. Great work!

  4. Hey Gracie! I really enjoyed reading this story and seeing all the changes you made! I like the detail throughout because it really emphasizes the point and moral of the story! I think you hit your goals spot on with making the destination more interesting and also I liked how you made the ending happy because who doesn't like a happy ending? Good job and keep up the great work!
